In todays corporate world, diversity is essential. Despite representing 18% of the UK population, Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) individuals hold only 1.5% of FTSE 100 board positions (Diversity UK).

Olmecs Black on Board (BoBprogramme aims to address this by preparing BME professionals for leadership roles and fostering inclusivity in boardrooms.

Olmec: Empowering Communities

Founded in 2003, Olmec grew from Presentation Housing, which was established in the 1960s to tackle housing inequalities. Today, Olmec champions race equality, offering transformative programmes designed to combat structural barriers and empower BME communities.

Black on Board: More Than Just Training

BoB is a 14-session course that equips participants with the skills needed for governance while fostering a strong community of over 300 alumni. Graduates receive ongoing support, mentorship, and access to board opportunities (Protiviti). As a BoB graduate, I secured a trustee role shortly after completing the programme, with the confidence to step into leadership.

The Case for Race Diversity in Boardrooms

Companies with diverse boards are 35% more likely to outperform their peers. Race diversity leads to improved decision-making, broader perspectives, and stronger connections to the communities companies serve (Diversity UK)

Boards that embrace diversity are better positioned to succeed and reflect the society they operate in.

Expanding Our Reach

In addition to Black on Board, Olmec offers anti-racist training and reciprocal mentoring programmes, fostering open dialogue and growth for both mentors and mentees. These initiatives empower participants to engage meaningfully with race-related and leadership challenges.

Olmec also offers innovative programmes that support underrepresented communities by creating pathways to leadership, employment, and social business ventures across diverse sectors.

A Call to Action

The Black on Board programme provides BME professionals with essential skills and an invaluable community. For organisations, supporting employees through BoB demonstrates a commitment to fostering diversity at the highest levels.
