It is more evident than ever that robust and multi-faceted climate action strategies are imperative to achieve the UK’s Net-Zero emissions target by 2050. To complement efforts to measure and reduce emissions, the purchase and retirement of quality carbon credits is essential. Carbonplace is on a mission to scale the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) by providing access, trust and transparency to this emerging market.
Carbonplace is a FinTech start-up that provides a global transaction and settlement network for voluntary carbon credits. This venture was borne out of a collaboration between leading international banks who shared a vision for the financialization of the VCM. This consortium recognised the need for urgent, large-scale climate action and sought to alleviate the uncertainties relating to this market. By using banks as channel partners, Carbonplace provides a full-service platform that connects buyers and sellers of carbon credits, arming them with a hub of connectivity and data. Carbonplace is the only carbon market solution powered by the world’s leading banks.
Not only is Carbonplace a driving force in the VCM, but it also exemplifies using business as a force for good. Many of us have had experience working in banks and large institutions, and it is evident that the best way to foster a healthy and positive culture is to create this from the inception of a business. We are proud to be a member of associations that share our commitment to accelerating sustainability efforts and promoting the wellbeing of all stakeholders, including the environment. Carbonplace became B Corp certified in August 2024, which signifies our involvement in a global community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.
Carbonplace invests in the professional development of the team, along with their physical and mental wellbeing. A comprehensive benefit scheme is provided including private health, dental and life insurance. Additional benefits include enrolment into a 3-week Human Performance programme focusing on key drivers of health, and access to gym passes. These benefits are provided and paid for by Carbonplace. We also have a fully stocked snack cupboard in the office, including both healthy options and some other… less healthy treats (it’s all about balance, right?)
The team has grown from 4 secondees in early 2023 to 23 permanent employees to date. This team has been carefully curated to ensure diversity of experience and thought, with members joining from a variety of professional, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We are an open-minded, curious and inclusive group of people, which our CEO has referred to as a ‘mini–United Nations’. Our team of 23 speak at least 19 languages between us, and we are so proud of our diversity. We have built genuine bonds of friendships through team volunteering days, social activities outside of work, and general office banter. Above all else, our team is united under the common goal of working in an organisation that is aligned with our personal goals of having a positive impact on society and fighting climate change.
